Vegan leather: a designation, a broad family of materials
The term vegan leather does not refer to one material but to a set of alternatives to animal leather: synthetic leatherette, bio-based materials derived from agricultural waste, recycled textiles and coatings, natural fibers such as cork or organic cotton.
Hence the confusion: two pairs labeled vegan leather can have radically different compositions (and impacts).

An important point, rarely explained: in France, Decree No. 2010-29 of January 8, 2010 reserves the designation "leather" for materials obtained from animal skin by tanning, while preserving the natural fiber structure.
In other words, "vegan leather," "vegetable leather," "apple leather," "mushroom leather," or "grape leather" are convenient linguistic shortcuts, but legally incorrect. Only the expression "vegetable-tanned leather" is correct, and it refers to real animal leather.
These appellations are still widely used in vegan leather goods and by consumers because they are immediately understandable. We use them here in this common sense, systematically specifying the actual material behind the word. This is the basis of transparency, and the first reflex to have when dealing with leather: ask what the product really contains.

What materials make up vegan leather?
Vegan shoes use a wide variety of materials. Here are the main families, from the most innovative to the most classic.
Bio-based materials from agricultural waste
This is the most ecological solution on paper: using an existing resource — in other words, waste — rather than creating a new crop to produce the material. This transformation of residue into a noble material is what makes these alternatives truly interesting.
- Apple leather: made from the residues of the juice and compote industry. Flexible, resistant, with a texture similar to high-end faux leather. - Grape leather: derived from grape pomace, the solid residue of winemaking. An idea born in Italy, logically developed in wine-producing countries.
- Piñatex: made from pineapple leaf fibers, a part of the plant usually burned after harvest.
- Cactus leather: nopal cactus grows without irrigation, making it an interesting option in dry areas.
- Cork and mushroom (mycelium): two plants with very different forms and renderings, still niche but rapidly developing.
A limitation to be aware of: most of these materials contain a polyurethane base or coating to ensure durability. They are therefore neither 100% plant-based nor entirely biodegradable. The proportion of plant fiber is precisely the information to ask a brand: a transparent company will communicate it.

Synthetic leatherette
Classic vegan leatherette is based on polyurethane (PU) or PVC. Technically without animal skins, therefore vegan, but made from plastic and petrochemicals. PVC is the more problematic of the two and is tending to disappear from serious brands. Bio-based leatherettes are emerging and improving the environmental performance of this type of material.
Recycled materials and natural fibers
Recycled nylon and polyester, organic cotton, upcycled denim, recycled rubber: these are the main components of a vegan sneaker, going far beyond just being an alternative to leather. What are the environmental impacts of leather?
The leather industry presents three distinct problems, which must be separated to reason correctly.
1. Upstream livestock farming. According to the FAO, livestock farming accounts for approximately 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It also impacts land use, water, and biodiversity when linked to deforestation. A portion of this carbon footprint is attributed to leather in life cycle analyses. The exact measurement of this portion is debated between the industry and NGOs.
2. Tanning. Chrome tanning consumes a lot of water and releases effluents loaded with metallic salts. In 2012, the Blacksmith Institute classified tanneries among the most polluting industries in the world, primarily in countries where waste treatment is unregulated. In Europe, regulations are much stricter: the location of the tannery changes everything.
3. End-of-life. Leather is often presented as biodegradable. This is true for raw hide; it is much less true for chrome-tanned leather.
The counter-argument to consider: animal hide is a co-product of the food industry. Cattle should not be raised for their hides, and without being repurposed into leather, these hides would become waste to be incinerated. The limitations, to be comprehensive: Low-end imitation leather wears out quickly and is difficult to repair; some bio-sourced materials remain expensive and produced in small series; and polyurethane is still plastic. Is vegan leather durable?
