Yes, vegan leather can be as durable as traditional leather, but it all depends on the material it's made from. That's the short answer. The term "vegan leather" actually hides very different materials: a low-end plastic-based vegan synthetic leather has nothing in common with apple leather or pineapple leather designed to last for years. Is vegan leather really durable?
The durability of vegan leather is directly correlated to its composition. There isn't just one type of vegan leather, but many, whose physical characteristics vary completely depending on the fiber's origin, the manufacturing process, and the material's thickness.
What resistance tests measure
In the textile industry, a material intended for leather goods or footwear is evaluated on several objective criteria:
- Abrasion resistance — how many rubbing cycles the material can withstand before wearing out (Martindale test).
- Flex resistance — a key point for a shoe, which bends thousands of times a day at the toes.
- Tear and tensile strength — the fiber's ability to withstand tension without breaking.
- Water and light fastness — discoloration, cracking, delamination over time.
Based on these criteria, the best alternatives to animal leather fall within the same range as entry- or mid-range cowhide. The key takeaway: it's not the animal or plant origin that determines a product's quality, but the quality of the material and its manufacturing.
Vegan leather vs. animal leather comparison
Certain vegan leathers, such as pineapple leather (Piñatex) or apple leather, exhibit excellent organic performance. Conversely, a low-end polyurethane faux leather, very thin and bonded to a synthetic backing, can crack after one or two years of intensive use. The empirical rule is simple: the less plastic in the composition, the more robust and durable the vegan leather will be.
A genuine thick, well-maintained animal leather can indeed last for decades. But in the reality of the market, the majority of leather products sold today use thin hides (bovine, calf, sheep) corrected and covered with a polyurethane finish… Which makes them closer to artificial leather than one might imagine. The difference in longevity between the two families is therefore much smaller than the leather industry suggests.
Vegan leather, synthetic leather, plant-based leather: what do the words really mean?
The vocabulary is a real source of confusion, and it needs to be clarified. Three pitfalls systematically recur in our relationship with leather in France:
- "Vegan leather" is not a legal designation. In France, the word leather is reserved for materials derived from animal skin. Brands therefore use vegan leather or synthetic leather for convenience, to describe a material that mimics leather without any animal skin.
- Vegetable leather ≠ vegan leather. Vegetable-tanned leather (or vegetable leather) is still animal skin, simply tanned with tree bark tannins rather than with minerals like chromium. Nothing vegan about that.
- TNot all synthetic leathers are equal. A synthetic leather derived from fossil fuels (PVC, solvent-based polyurethane) and a plant-based material do not have the same physical characteristics or the same environmental impact.

How is vegan leather made? The manufacturing process
Unlike animal leather, whose production relies on tanning a hide, vegan leather is made by assembling fibers. Making vegan leather never involves chemically imitating a hide, but rather constructing a new material from a plant. The manufacturing process generally follows four steps.
- Source collection — pineapple leaves harvested from Costa Rica to the Philippines, apple pomace and grape pomace from the food industry, cactus paddles, cork oak bark, mushroom mycelium grown in a laboratory. Many of these raw materials are valorized agricultural waste.
- Transformation into fiber or pulp — drying, grinding, purification, then sheeting to form a non-woven fabric.
- Binding and coating — this is the crucial step for durability. A binder (bioplastic, resin, or water-based polyurethane) strengthens the fiber. The percentage of binder determines both the material's strength and its ecological balance.
- Finishing — embossing, dyeing, protective layer on the back and surface to achieve the look and feel of traditional leather.
Today, almost all plant-based leathers contain a portion of polymer to last over time. A material announced with 70% plant content is already excellent performance to date, and the development of bio-based binders increases this figure every year.
What alternatives to animal leather exist? Materials and their properties
Today, there are about ten credible materials to replace animal skin. Here are the most common types of vegan leather and their properties.
Pineapple leather (Piñatex) — made from the fruit's leaf fibers, a by-product of harvesting. Light, flexible, with an original plush texture. A very good compromise between lightness and durability.
Apple leather (AppleSkin) — produced from apple pomace, a waste product of the food industry (juices, compotes). It is one of the most durable on the market, with a feel very close to traditional leather. Excellent for footwear due to its flex resistance.
Cactus leather (Desserto) — derived from nopal cactus paddles, grown without irrigation. Light, flexible, particularly waterproof.
Mushroom leather — obtained from mycelium, the root-like part of the mushroom, cultivated in a few weeks. Very natural fuzzy texture. A promising sector, still expensive on an industrial scale.
Cork — from the bark of cork oaks, harvested without felling the tree. 100% natural, light, waterproof, but less flexible for certain uses.
Eucalyptus and grape fibers — more recent natural materials, often used for linings or fashion accessories.
Bioplastics — made from renewable resources (corn, sugarcane), they offer performance similar to petrochemical-based synthetic materials with a reduced carbon footprint.
Polyurethane (PU) and PVC — the historical synthetic leathers. Cheap and easy to produce, but derived from hydrocarbons, with a significant environmental impact in both production and end-of-life. PVC is the more problematic of the two.
Each material has specific properties in terms of durability and resistance. The choice also depends on the intended object: a jacket or garment will require flexibility, while a sneaker will demand hold and a shape that doesn't collapse. For example, a shoe made from apple leather retains its shape after thousands of flexes, whereas a lining will benefit from being lighter. Apple leather and pineapple leather stand out for their dual advantage: reduced environmental impact and real organic performance in use.
