At ME.LAND, we are convinced that the fashion industry must change to meet current environmental and social challenges. Faced with the climate emergency, but also with greenwashing that blurs the lines, material is the best arbiter: it can be checked, traced, and compared. This guide reviews all the materials currently used in eco-designed footwear, what they are really worth, their limitations, and how to read a composition before adding a pair to your cart.
What is an ethical and eco-responsible sneaker? Definition
Let's start with the definition, because the word is sometimes overused. An eco-responsible sneaker is a sports shoe designed to reduce its impact on the planet and on the people who make it, throughout its entire life cycle: raw material extraction, production, transport, use, end of life.
An ethical sneaker adds an explicit social dimension: workshop working conditions, respect for labor laws, fair remuneration for suppliers, traceability of the supply chain. The two notions largely overlap but are not interchangeable: a sneaker can be made from natural materials and sewn in a workshop where conditions are poor.
Concretely, a pair of sneakers deserves these adjectives when it checks four boxes:
- Low-impact materials: recycled, bio-based, natural, or made from waste.
- Identified production site: a named, audited workshop in a country where labor law is applied.
- Real durability: a shoe that lasts three years is inherently more ecological than a "green" shoe that lasts six months.

The rest, the vocabulary, the forest visuals, the green leaves displayed on the website or relayed in the media, are non-binding. Verifying these four points is necessary before any purchase, and how the pair will then be used is just as important.
What materials for eco-responsible sneakers? The five main families
Materials used in sustainable sneakers fall into five families: recycled materials, bio-based materials, natural fibers, soles, and secondary components. None is perfect: each has an advantage, a process, and limitations that must be understood to make an informed choice. It is the research carried out in recent years by the entire industry that has made these solutions accessible: ten years ago, creating a sports shoe without petroleum or animal leather was still a laboratory prototype.
1. Recycled materials: nylon, polyester, and rubber
This is the most common family, and the easiest to verify thanks to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) label, which certifies the recycled content of a textile and the traceability of the chain.
Recycled nylon and recycled polyester are obtained from plastic waste: PET bottles, fishing nets, industrial scraps. Each collected bottle is crushed into flakes, melted, then spun into a textile fiber that becomes the sneaker's upper. The gain is twofold: we avoid extracting new petroleum, and we remove waste from nature.
At ME.LAND, our nylons come from SEAQUAL Initiative, a program that pays fishermen to bring marine plastics they collect in their nets back to shore. The yarn is traced and numbered. This nylon is not only environmentally friendly: it is also lightweight and very durable, making it an ideal material for urban sneakers like the VIVACE and the EVAN.


Finally, recycled rubber turns waste into an asset: our soles are made from industrial scraps from sole production and plastic caps. A material that the industry throws away becomes a premium component again.
Its limit: like any synthetic textile, polyester and nylon release microfibers when washed. Recycling reduces the upstream carbon footprint, but it does not solve this downstream issue.
2. Bio-based materials: apple, grape, cactus, pineapple
These are the innovations that attract the most attention, and for good reason: they make it possible to replace animal leather with a material derived from agricultural or agro-food waste.
Apple leather. Yes, at ME.LAND, even apples find a second life. The skins and cores from the juice industry are dried, ground into powder, then bound and applied to a textile backing. The result is flexible, matte, refined in appearance, and can be worked like traditional leather. It is found in our LANDER Chelsea boots, our derbies, and our collaboration with the jewelry brand Mademoiselle Pimpante. It reduces food waste, eliminates polluting processes in the leather industry, starting with chrome tanning, which accounts for about 85% of global production. In addition, it is part of a vegan approach, without any animal products.
Grape leather. Made from grape marc, this winemaking residue composed of skins, seeds, and stems, perfectly illustrates the synergy between two industries: the waste from one becomes the raw material for the other. A material logically very present in France and Italy, where the resource is abundant.
Cactus leather. Made from nopal leaves, it is appreciated for its resistance and the water efficiency of its cultivation: the cactus grows without irrigation.
Piñatex. Made from pineapple leaf fibers, an agricultural waste previously burned in the fields, it has a very recognizable slightly fluffy natural texture. We do not use it yet, but we are closely following these advances to continue pushing the limits of textile innovation.
Bananatex. A biodegradable fabric made from banana plant fibers, grown without fertilizers or pesticides.
Their limit, and it must be said: most of these bio-based materials still contain a proportion of polyurethane to ensure flexibility and waterproofing. The proportion of plant material varies greatly from one supplier to another: a serious brand communicates it. Let's also clarify a point of vocabulary often ignored: in French law, the term "leather" is reserved for tanned animal skin. "Vegetable leather", "vegan leather" or "apple leather" are trade names, not legal designations.
3. Natural fibers: organic cotton, hemp, linen, cork
Less spectacular, these natural materials are nevertheless the basis for many low-top vegan sneakers, linings, and laces.
Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and uses significantly less water than conventional cotton, which is mostly irrigated. Hemp and linen go further: they grow in Europe, with almost no inputs, and produce a fiber with great mechanical resistance. Cork, harvested without felling the tree, is lightweight, insulating, and recyclable: it's an excellent component for summer sneakers, worn all season long.
The useful benchmark here is the OEKO-TEX label, which guarantees the absence of harmful chemical substances in the finished textile, and GOTS certified organic cotton.
4. Soles: natural rubber and recycled rubber
A natural rubber sole is produced from latex harvested from the rubber tree, a renewable, biodegradable, and very comfortable material. This latex also replaces synthetic glues: at ME.LAND, our glue is 100% vegan natural latex.
Recycled rubber, on the other hand, closes the loop: our soles are designed to be both robust and comfortable, while extending the lifespan of already produced resources. Using recycled rubber means reducing the carbon footprint of our production by minimizing the need for virgin raw materials. It's a conscious choice that values not only waste, but also the artisanal know-how of our Portuguese partners.
5. Invisible components: laces, glue, lining, packaging
This is where a brand's credibility is played out. A pair of sneakers can have up to 70 different components, and those that make up the shoe beyond the upper almost always go unnoticed. An upper made from recycled material is not enough if the laces are virgin polyester, the glue is solvent-based, and the packaging is plastic.
At ME.LAND, the laces are organic cotton, the glue is natural latex, and the packaging is recycled cardboard with an organic cotton pouch that then serves as a storage bag. Zero unnecessary plastic.

Materials to avoid
Two cases deserve to be mentioned, because they are often hidden behind virtuous discourse.
Low-end synthetic leather, particularly PVC, is a synthetic derived from petrochemicals, produced with problematic chemical components, and cracks within a season. A "vegan" material in the strict sense—no animal products—but catastrophic in terms of environmental impact and durability. This is the best example that vegan does not automatically mean ecological.
Traditional chrome-tanned leather poses another problem: an energy-intensive process, water-consuming, and generating toxic effluents. It should be noted, however, that leather from the food industry—the one we use for our non-vegan range—valorizes a co-product that would exist anyway. The ethical debate remains open; we leave it to each individual's judgment.
How are eco-designed sneakers made? The manufacturing process
Knowing the materials is not enough: how they are assembled matters just as much. Here are the six steps in the manufacturing process of an eco-designed pair.
- Design. This is the decisive stage. A reduced number of materials are chosen, preference is given to detachable assembly, and a model is designed that will remain wearable for several years rather than just one season.
- Raw material sourcing. Collection of waste, sorting, transformation into pellets or fiber. This is where the bulk of the carbon footprint is determined.
- Textile production. Spinning, weaving or knitting, dyeing. OEKO-TEX certified dyes avoid the most problematic chemical substances.
- Cutting and stitching. Done by hand in a workshop, with an optimized cutting plan to limit scraps—scraps that are themselves recovered.
- Assembly. Assembly of the upper and the sole, with latex glue or by stitching. Stitching allows for resoling: a real gain in durability.
- Packaging and shipping. Recycled packaging, land or sea transport rather than air.
What about "Made in France"? This is the most frequently asked question, and it deserves an honest answer. The French sports shoe industry has almost disappeared: there are only a handful of workshops capable of assembling a sneaker in France, and rarely at an affordable price. Traced European manufacturing, in an audited workshop, with materials sourced within 50 km, is often more virtuous than a "Made in France" assembled from components imported from Asia. This is the choice we made: design in Paris, manufacturing in Portugal.
How to read the composition of a pair of sneakers?
Here's a quick guide to keep in mind when buying. The European shoe marking requires three pictograms, one for each part: the upper, the lining, and the outsole. Each is associated with a material symbol (leather, textile, other materials). This is the legal minimum; it's not enough.
The five questions to ask:
- What is the upper made of, precisely? "Recycled materials" without a percentage means nothing. Look for a rate.
- Which labels? Global Recycled Standard for recycled, OEKO-TEX for absence of toxic substances, GOTS for organic cotton, PETA-Approved Vegan for total absence of animal components, SEAQUAL for marine plastic. A label is verifiable; a slogan is not.
- Where is the production site? A country is not enough. A committed brand names its workshop and states whether it is audited.
- What about secondary components? Glue, laces, lining, packaging.
- What happens to the pair at the end of its life? Repairable? Taken back? Directed towards a recycling channel?
If a brand does not answer any of these questions on its website, the missing information is an answer in itself.
What are the advantages of vegan sneakers?
Vegan sneakers, meaning without any animal-derived components, offer concrete advantages—provided, once again, that the chosen materials are reliable.
- No animal husbandry, no tanning. This instantly avoids the two heaviest stages of the leather industry in terms of emissions, water usage, and chemical discharge.
- A measurable reduction in environmental impact. Less energy mobilized, fewer virgin resources, and often a valorization of waste.
- Ethical consistency. For many people, this is the primary reason: animal respect, without compromise, from laces to soles.
- Simpler maintenance. Most vegan materials clean with soap and water, without specific care products.
- A complete range. Sneakers, ankle boots, derbies, but also ballet flats, bags, accessories, and clothing: the vegan offering now covers the entire wardrobe, for men, women, and children.
The nuance to keep in mind: vegan describes the composition, not the impact. A PVC synthetic leather sneaker is vegan and polluting. The good reflex is to cross-reference both criteria.
How to choose ethical sneakers?
The choice boils down to seven criteria, in this order of importance:
- Materials and their actual percentage.
- Place of production and working conditions in the workshop.
- Independent labels that verify the two previous points.
- Durability and comfort: a pair that isn't worn is useless, even if perfect on paper.
- Repairability and end of life.
- Brand transparency : does it name its suppliers?
- Price, relative to the duration of use rather than the receipt.

Rather than a top or a ranking of the "best brands," which ages poorly and leaves you without a method, here is the grid to evaluate any market player in five minutes:
- Does a materials page exist? A serious brand dedicates an entire content to this subject, not three lines at the bottom of the product sheet.
- Is the workshop named? City, size, social audit.
- Are the labels identified and verifiable? With an accreditation number when one exists.
